What is Street Sheet?
“Created by serial trendsetter, maliQ, as part of the HHH Music-Lifestyle-Fashion brand, SreetSheet is simply a portal for all that urban South African street culture that really matters. “
Now here’s a little story that must be told…
Street Sheet was started in 2007 by maliQ out of frustration at the lack of Hip Hop presence on the internet in South Africa. Having spent thousands in rands of bandwidth of his day job employers’ internet accounts since 2004 surfing the e-streets, he noticed the trends in the US with Hip Hop moving online. No longer did the game depend on TV and Radio to break new artists but instead blogs like NahRight.Com were telling the world who the next greats were.
It cost absolutely nothing, well except for the monthly hosting fees and a lot of time in the first few months conceptualizing what he wanted StreetSheet to reflect and represent. He finally found my niche in being the only online Hip Hop publication that had updated content every day. Most of the posts on the daily news blog are leaks from upcoming and established artists from the mainstream and indie scenes. Of course he leans more to the left because that’s where he feels most comfortable being an artist himself. That said, SS tries to be objective and sometimes put up songs and videos of artists maliQ wouldn’t be caught dead listening to on a normal day. In his own words, “When all is said and done, I started StreetSheet because before I was an MC, I was a fan of the music and I still am. So no, to all the people who keep asking why I post other people’s music on my blogzine, I see no conflict of interest. It is simply a reflection of my security in what I do and not feeling threatened by others whom I feed off.” Other sections of the website include interviews, print and video, and a blog section with contributions by writer Spha Ntombela on issues ranging from “politrix” to socio-economic current affairs and the business of music.
How do i get my music on SS?
That said, when asked what the criteria is for having your song posted on SS, the answer is simple. SS doen’t care how big or small you are in the industry just as long as your song is quality- beats and rhymes- like all good Hip Hop. Send a link to your song on a public file hosting site like Mediafire.com to download and a high res artist pic to info@streetsheet.co.za and if we like it we’ll put it on. Easy.
