Says D: Check out the brand new video for Sweet by Jaak. Sweet (‘sweat’ in Afrikaans) is the first single from Jaak’s debut solo album, Hipe Presents: Fletse Maniere. With Hipe on production, the video was directed, shot and edited by Christian Denslow & Garth von Glehn for Greenhaus Productions.
Slik makes mince out of these two ol’ timers (his words, not mine). Wonder what Tumi would make of this after accusing him (Slik) of being more ‘business than flow’ (his words, not mine) on the hidden track on Whole Worlds which is out now.
Spitting a sick verse in a sick state earlier in the week. Thank you i feel much better now the madam took care of it. Cop the Dec/Jan edition of HYPE for a breakdown of my favorite verse from my favorite song on Sleepless in Seattle/ My Mind on Cap City. First episode in my new Hip Hop, Islam & Life video blog giving you a glimpse into yours truly, the man, the mc, the activist.
I’ll let Dplanet tell it: “We just finished post-production on the new Ben Sharpa video for ‘Callin’ It Quits (We’re Here)’. We’re on that HD Robot Army Music (RAM) tip with a heavy production by Milanese and warped visuals from spo0ky. Also, check out a nice interview with Ben and Raiko on Mahala. They talk about the state of the music industry in SA and their recent tour to Europe.
This is also courtesy of the folks at Vuzu TV covering the adventures of Ben Sharpa and DJ Raiko in Europe. Go to their website here for previous webisodes.
This was fun non of those generic interview questions for a change.
Today’s my bday so this new skin you’re seeing couldn’t have dropped at a better time- a couple of tweaks here and there in the morning and we should be good but for now im out got a cake to cut. Thanx team tank.
Who’s Whosane? Well I don’t know much about him either but I first heard him on the new Ill Skillz album Off The Radar. These are just some videos of him when he was in Cape Town recently. He’s currently on tour with the mighty Mos Def and Jay Electronica in support of The Ecstatic I believe.
Picked this one up on The Times website: “Local lyricist Zubz has just released his new album entitled Cochlea- One Last Letta. Watch this week’s episode of The Von Vodcast, as Jason chats to the star about the new album and goes behind the scenes of the music video shoot for the smash hit, Part Time Lover- Full Time Freak.”
Got this from Boogie (no not Hakeem the other one):
“sup Homie? This is too nice and I thought you should check this…. your boy PH has done it again… I got a clip he made featuring a dope beat sampled from the classic “BILLIEJEAN” joint by MJ. you gonna love this, and you know SS(sheetstreet) is my home for dope music :) here’s the link“.
ETC Crew: “For ETC Crew’s second music video, Martin Mezzabotta took the lyrics of “To the Black Man” and tried to summarise the patronising trends of post-Apartheid movies in 2 minutes and 45 seconds. The video tells the story of a white man finding his redemption by adopting the son of the black man he had earlier electrocuted in a wet-bag.”
This webisode includes footage from the SAMA nominees signing ceremony (whatever that is, I aint watch through it all yet) and interviews on the Siz n Scoop.
(Still) not sure how to pronounce this brother’s name (anymore). Can you believe it? Yea me too. Thing is I thought I did until I heard Lee pronouncing it differently in a conversation at Ritual recently. So before you shake your head at me, better check yourself. But then again, this is SA, DERISNOMUSTEROFPRONUNZATION!
Spotted at NahRight. Still have no regrets for missing it though. Don’t know why but I suspect I’m starting to boycott these overseas acts until we get our own house in order. That goes for radio coverage and live shows.
A little description of what’s in the video clip after the jump.
“South African director Gavin Hood has hit the big time. The Oscar winner is hard at work promoting his new film, the highly anticipated X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film opened in South Africa on Wednesday ahead of the USA’s big release on 1 May…”
From directing Tsotsi to this wow this ninja means business huh.
As you might know Mos Def features in this movie and will be at the launch when it opens in SA on the 8th April. Nah I don’t know the co-ordinates! A little bit more info here.
Here’s what one of the comments on Ventilation (where I obviously swiped this) had to say:
“I’m shocked and was shoked that Shuga can do that type of freestyle.Nja'Yam the man with tha Minimal lyrical content.Dont take this personal that freestyle soubdz better than the rhymz u laace-up on skwat-kamp Jointz but i m still shoked Nigger.”
Here is ETC Crew’s first music video made for the song “Extra Terrestrials Calling”. The video was shot by Martin Mezzabotta in two days between Hermanus, Cape Town and the Engen on the N7.
VIEWS:SA Rappers Have No Image Pt. 2 The latest piece from SA’s hardest working Hip Hop columnist is here for your perusal. O what was that? Arggh dont even mention it, the pleasure’s all his.
I know this is hardly a world premiere but I don’t watch that much TV anymore so I’m a little behind with videos by cats who either dont have an online presence at all or hardly update their websites, blogs, whatever.
Slik and Shugasmakx stop by at the Nike store in Melville, Jozi to pick some free gear and then head off to Cap City at the Tuks Rag event where they perform a signature rather kwaito-ish song. No serious cuz, no shots, it goes something like ‘dlala ngento yakho’, which loosely translates to ‘play with your thang’ in English. No pun intended.
The Verb takes you through a list of things that he likes. Including sending people those irritating chain emails you wish your colleagues at work would stop sending you. Afterall your favourite MC’s are only humans too.
You can also get the latest exclusives (he’s on the 16th verse right now) on his website. Oh and he claims he’s started or will soon be starting with recording Rites Of Passage. Uhm where’s Off The Books, buddy?
The MC with green thumbs speaks on his album and working with HHP. Didn’t homie say he was quitting? Guess you should know better than trusting one of these daily funnypapers with such hip hop related ‘breaking’ news. Anyway, don’t watch that much TV anymore so not sure how old this stuff is.
Off the record: Dear, Proverb, is Off The Books ever coming out or has it fallen victim to its own title and gotten written off. Drop that shit already.
We got to stick our handheld camera in while this episode was shot which features Hakeem, Golden Shovel, Maliq, DJ Blaq T and Ras. The show’s co-hosted by HYPE mag editor, Mizi and ya boy Ozmic of Ritual Stores word has it that he might be teaming up with Kenzhero again for a comeback of The Bridge on Y and screens on Wednesdays on the community TV channel, Soweto TV, and on the DSTV satellite bouquet. Now you know.
Hit the jump to see Masta Ace freestyling at Ritual. This was in reply to a Hymphatic Thabs freestyle. No, not a battle, just a sharing really.
We’re so pan-African, it’s digusting but for as long as the blood of Abdullah Ibrahim courses in her veins, we’ll keep interest in her. Uh oh yes of course and it does help that she’s the dopest femcee period.
OK there it is , so you can stop asking now. The sound on the clip could be better but you can still make out the words clearly.
UPDATE: You might have noticed there’s 6 MC’s on stage and we only mentioned 4. Humblest apologies. The other two cats names are- Reason and Smurf. But you already knew that. No?
He also clearifies a couple of misconceptions our brothers and sisters in America have about the continent beginning with the simple fact that Africa is not a country but a continent. Only beef we had was the imagery juxtaposed with the interview, for instance a picture of some village with the rainbow in the sky while describing South Africa. For God’s sake this dude stayed in Johannesburg (which is arguably Africa’s answer to New York) while he was here. Couldn’t they have googled some photos of the Johannesburg metropolitan, that would’ve have been more relevant to the interview seeing as that’s where he got his ass robbed anyway and not in some peaceful village with mud huts.
We caught up with the young homey, Panic, outside the world famous State Theatre where some of Cap City’s finest first cut their teeth coming up in the game. The result, a massacre in 25 seconds. Short and shweet.
Reading a verse he had recently written out of his celly actually. This went down at his store, Ritual in Newtown, Jozi. FYI this dude is a B-Boy/MC/Graf writer/Radio show co-host/store owner/events promoter. What are you doing for Hip Hop?
No, we’re not posting this video because it has an African theme to it. Actually it’s because we’ve been sitting around our virtual office asking ourselves this: how long till SA rappers start singing and who’s likely to go first?
Says Dpleezy, “Check out the brand new video for Bread and Butter, the Nyambz-produced title track from Rattex’s forthcoming album Bread and Butter… In stores mid-October.”
OK, this is a bit old but we just thought we’d say, ‘stop sleeping on Hearstreet‘- these boys stay on their grind! On the clip they follow Fiddy and co. around on their last trip to SA. And no, they don’t have the clip where he gets his chain snatched in Angola why would you even ask ha ha.
Peep your boy J Live - djing and mcing at the same time - at the JHB installment of Party People and like the post below, well, we’ve been meaning to post these for a while now. That also goes for the Driemanskap video performing live at DJ Beatoven’s launch party at the State Theatre which took place on the same night in PTA. Enjoy.
Been meaning to post these for a while- videos of Wordsworth live at Party People in JHB a few weeks ago. The highlight is when the sound system at the club pauses and well, i guess you’re gonna have to watch to find out what he says after.
