That man is an ocean of knowledge, gave me a totally new perspective on my music both artistically and as a business.

As promised on the last article I will go into more detail on the Business Plan. I know some of you might be yawning already, but I suggest you stick around. Things such as business plans seem to be boring to most heads – in fact the business plan is boring to most businesspeople as well. Most of them just get someone else to do it and pay them.
If you don’t know by now, the Philosopher believes that Hip Hop is a business, maybe one of artistic inclination, but a business nonetheless. It frustrates me that most heads do not behave like businesspeople, by this I don’t necessarily mean we should start wearing suits and carrying brief cases. Any business has a market of target customers that it has to serve. It also has a plan to get to those customers. And sales projections, production plans, cash flow projections and the like? Yes, you need all of these in a business or when planning for one.
The current Hip Hop business model goes something like this in South Africa: choose the sickest beat anyone has ever heard, write the illest ish ever written, record the ish in the most fluid of flows, print CDs, pray for airplay, print t-shirts and posters, launch a website and then complain about the low sales that are very likely to follow. He also clearifies a couple of misconceptions our brothers and sisters in America have about the continent beginning with the simple fact that Africa is not a country but a continent. ETC Crew, which if I’m not mistaken stands for Eliminate The Competition Crew, is the quintessential BEE compliant rainbow nation hip hop group. The Broadcasting Complaints Tribunal of South Africa has ruled that the Zubz “Get Out” song amongst other things incites violence and therefore should be banned from being broadcasted countrywide.
